The Boat People of Latsch Island
Latsch Island is an ongoing personal project. The cluster of boat houses resides on a small island on the Mississippi River in between Minnesota and Wisconsin. I grew up in the town of Winona on the Minnesota side adjacent to Latsch Island. Growing up, Latsch Island was a familiar, but also strange area to me. I’ve been documenting Latsch Island on and off since my college days. Full of river rats vagabonds, recluses, carpenters, retirees, professors and local politicians, this place is full of characters and continues to be an intriguing source of inspiration for me each time I visit home. I’ve documented Latsch so far with stills and three documentary videos.
